BALTIMORE, Md. – Penn College used a relentless defense, and a late score, to knock off Notre Dame of Maryland, 1-0, in the United East men's soccer quarterfinals Saturday. The win advanced the Wildcats (10-6-2) to its third UE semifinal against top-seeded St. Mary's Wednesday. PCT previously reached the semifinals in 2017 and 2018.
How it happened:
Sean McGroarty,
Elliott Rattiram,
Will Watson, and
Zach Foskey anchored a defense, that also included midfielder
Cooper Smith,
Silas Miller,
Diego Diaz and
Mason Kostick which held the Gators to just two shots, none of which were on goal.
Following a scoreless first half, in which Smith and
Logan Pietrzak had their shots stopped, the Wildcats sent two more on frame in the second half. After attempts from Diaz and
Joshua Hudak were turned away, Penn College was fouled in the box and
Scott Goldfeder converted the penalty kick for the eventual game-winner.
Inside the box: PCT out shot Notre Dame, 12-2 (5-0 on-goal) and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
