WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College overcame a 10-point halftime deficit en route to 68-61 win over Penn State Altoona in a nonconference women's basketball game Monday. The Wildcats improved to 5-0, while the Nittany Lions fell to 2-2.
How it happened: After Penn College jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, Altoona countered with a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 5:54 left in the first. Raenna Andreas tied the game with a long ball at 4:19 but the Lions answered with a 5-0 spurt to take 12-7 lead with three remaining.
Gigi Parlante scored five-straight, and Breanna Valentine netted the next five of seven points, to give PCT 17-14 lead with 1:11 on the clock en route to a 17-16 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was a one-possession game midway through the quarter, before Altoona separated from a 23-23 deadlock, with 5:22 left before halftime, with a 14-4 run to lead 37-27 at halftime.
The Lions maintained a two-possession lead until a pair of Valentine free throws made it 41-38, with 4:10 left in the third. The Wildcats pulled within one, twice, the final coming on Haliey Theuret's free throw with three seconds left to make it 49-48 at the end of the third.
Layups from Parlante and Valentine to start the final quarter gave PCT the lead for good, 52-51, with 8:24 left in the game as the Wildcat led by as many eight, 66-58, on two Parlante free throws with 32 seconds left.
Inside the box: Valentine led all scorers with 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds, stole four passes, and dished out three assists. Parlante finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, while Andreas added nine and
Kayla Herzer eight.
