WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Penn College's wrestling team gave crosstown rival Lycoming College all it could handle on Thursday night after a 20-20 standoff that host Lycoming took 21-20 on criteria with a 6-4 edge in total bouts won. Penn College went to 7-2 in duals for the season and the Warriors improved to 12-4.
How it happened: A major decision by Kaden Ware at 133, and a 17-2 technical fall by Noah Hunt at 141 gave the Wildcats an early 9-4 lead before Lyco won the next two bouts and led 11-9.
A 17-1 technical fall by Carter Davis at 165 put Penn College back on top 14-9 before the Warriors got back-to-back decisions at 174 and 184 to reclaim a 17-14 edge.
With two bouts remaining, Nicholas Woodruff pinned his opponent with a lat drop on the edge of the mat at 197 to turn the tide for a 20-17 Wildcat lead and put it in the hands of the heavyweights to decide the match. There, Wildcat Nicholai Brotzman and Warrior Robbie West were tied at 6-all after a first period flurry, and West went ahead 9-6 in the second period. In the third, Brotzman was awarded a point after West was called for stalling, but could not get any closer in a 9-7 decision.
Although Lycoming improved to 5-0 in lifetime matches between the two colleges, Penn College's showing under first-year coach Dalton Rohrbaugh was its most competitive, with a 27-17 Warrior win in 2022 being the next closest.
Up next: Penn College competes at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships at Penn State Behrend.
