Penn College splits season opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College split a nonconference softball doubleheader against Juniata Friday to open its 2025 the season. The Wildcats won the first game, 5-0, before dropping the nightcap, 6-3.

In game one,
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Madison Herriman and a double to center by Grace Lorson. PCT added three more in the fourth when Logan Hamilton singled to center and   Harley Kunes' fielder's choice plated Ryleigh Rinker. The Wildcats added its fifth run when Kunes stole second and Sofia Laspina touched home on error by the catcher on the throw to second.

Six players finished with a hit each for PCT as Herriman, Lorson, Rinker, Hamilton, Kunes, and Carissa Lusk tallied a knock. Mackenzie Weaver tossed a three-hit shutout, with three strikeouts, and one walk.

In game two,
Penn College struck in the first inning when Lexi Snyder's triple brought in Weaver but the Eagles answered with six straight runs to lead 6-1 through the top of the seventh. The Wildcats made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the frame when Herriman picked up an RBI, and an error scored PCT's third run, but that was close as they would get.

Weaver paced Penn College's offense with a pair of hits. Fayth Anderson took the loss in the circle after firing four innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on eight hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Up next: Penn College returns to action Saturday, 12:15 p.m., at Messiah College.
