WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College opened United East play with a sweep against Valley Forge Saturday. The Wildcats won the first game, 15-2, and walked-off with a 12-11 win the nightcap to improve to 2-0 UE, 5-6 overall.
In game one,
PCT jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an error in the first and
Jaiden Augustine's RBI single to center in the second. Valley Forge tied the game with two in the top of the third before
Brandon Shane plated the eventual go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the frame.
An error, and
Levi Purnell's sacrifice, in the fourth brought in two more runs for the Wildcats. Penn College added five in the both the fifth and sixth innings.
Augustine and Townsend both finished with three hits, while
Jaydon Goebel added a pair of knocks. Purnell and Goebel both ended with three RBI.
Griffin Vollman improved to 1-0 after 5.2 innings of work. He allowed two earned, on six hits, with three strikeouts, and two walks.
In game two,
VF took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Wildcats evened the game in the second when Purnell smacked his first collegiate homer 427 feet, and
Brandon Shane brought in a run with a double to left. Penn College went ahead 5-3, in the third after a balk, and sacrifices from Purnell and Shane, plated three runs.
After
Dallas Griess made it 6-3 in the fourth with an RBI single, the Patriots clawed back with two in the sixth and three in the seventh, and two in the eighth to lead 11-7. Purnell smacked a RBI single in the seventh, while Griess and Augustine each brought in a run in the eight to get within two, 11-9. Griess made it 11-0 in the ninth with a double to left before Augustine's walk-off double brought in Jenkins and Griess.
Griess finished with four hits and three RBI, while Purnell picked up three hits and three RBI, and Shane and Augustine finished with two hits each.
Dillon Gallagher fired 2.2 innings to improve to 1-0. He gave up two earned, on three hits, with two strikeouts.
Penn College returns to action Tuesday, 3 p.m., at Elmira.
