Wildcats Edged by Soaring Eagles

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- Penn College baseball was downed by Elmira, 7-6, in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats dropped to 5-7 while the Soaring Eagles improved to 5-6.

How it happened: Elmira broke a 6-6 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth and held on in the top of the ninth for the victory. 

The Soaring Eagles started off the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Wildcats responded by scoring three runs in the second and one in the fifth to tie the game.

Anthony Barbella started the top of the second with a walk and Jaydon Goebel singled before Kevin Cute brought in Barbella on a ground rule double. Jaiden Augustine continued his hot streak at the plate with a two-run single to drive in Goebel and Cute. 

Griess batted an RBI single in the fifth before Elmira added two runs in the bottom half of the inning and the Wildcats scored twice in the eighth for a 6-6 tie. 

Inside the box: Griess, Augustine, Goebel and Shawn Townsend each recorded two of the Wildcats 12 hits as Augustine led the offense with a pair of RBIs and Goebel scored twice. Mason Balfanz racked up six Ks as he started the first three innings on the mound.

Up next: Penn College hosts Elmira on Wednesday at 3 p.m., before jumping back into United East doubleheader action on Saturday (12 p.m.) against Penn State Abington.
