Wildcats sweep Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College swept a nonconference doubleheader softball series against Lycoming College Thursday. The Wildcats improved to 14-7, after a 2-1 walk-off in game one and a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

Penn College has won the last four contests against the Warriors, which dropped to 9-4, after going 1-8 all-time against Lycoming from 2015-2019.

In game one,`
Ryleigh Rinker gave PCT a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she doubled in Grace Lorson. Lycoming broke up a Mackenzie Weaver no-hitter in the fifth and tied the game at 1-1, which eventually forced extra innings. After Weaver retired the Warriors in order in the top of the eighth, Madison Herriman bunted Carissa Lusk to third in the bottom of the eighth and Weaver smacked a walk-off single to center field for the win.

Weaver led the offense with a pair of hits and threw a complete-game two-hitter in the circle. She improved to 9-3 after surrendering one unearned run, struck out five, and walked no batters. Weaver is eight strikeouts shy of reaching 500 in her career.

In game two,
Lycoming jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Wildcats exploded for six runs in the fifth to take the lead for good, 6-5. An error plated Lusk, Weaver brought in a run with an RBI fielder's choice, and Mackenzi Tice helped herself with a three-run triple to right field to make it 5-3. Tice later scored on a wild pitch, which became the eventual game-winning run.

Lycoming made a late comeback in the seventh with a one-out two-run double to get within one, 6-5, but Tice got the final two outs.

Lexi Snyder and Tice led Penn College's offense with two hits each. Tice improved to 5-2 after surrendering five runs (four earned), on eight hits, with eight strikeouts, and six walks.
