Purnell Rookie of the Year; Five Wildcats Selected to All-United East Teams

LATHAM, N.Y. -- Penn College baseball collected five United East All-Conference honors after the conference revealed the postseason awards on Wednesday. Freshman designated hitter Levi Purnell was named United East Rookie of the Year and selected to the third team by the league's coaches. Sophomores Dallas Griess (outfield) and Shawn Townsend (middle infield) earned first team honors while Jaydon Goebel (corner infield) and Matt Munoz (outfield) were selected to the second team. 

The Wildcats' five all-conference selections were a catalyst for an 11-5 conference record (18-18 overall), returning to the United East playoffs and securing the No. 4 seed in the postseason. It was the most postseason selections in the program's NCAA-era and the most since the 2014 season which also saw five Wildcat selections in the PSUAC. 

Purnell is the second consecutive Wildcat to be named Rookie of the Year following Griess' selection in 2024. Purnell batted .343 in 30 appearances with 37 hits, eight doubles and a team-high five home runs in his freshman campaign. The Snow Shoe, Pa., native ranked 19th in the conference with a .556 slugging percentage and 16th with a .486 on-base percentage while driving in 32 RBIs and crossing the plate 30 times. Purnell posted four three-hit games while his best game of the season saw a two-homer day with four RBIs against Penn State Brandywine. 

Griess collected his second all-conference nod, besting his second team selection from a season ago. Griess ranked 23rd in the league with a .369 batting average, racking up 48 hits, five doubles, three triples, three home runs and was 10-for-12 in stolen bases. The Wildcats leadoff hitter and center fielder recorded a five-hit game with a triple and five RBIs against Penn State Berks and a four-hit game against Valley Forge while posting two more three-hit games this season. 

Townsend picked up first-team consideration after leading the Wildcats in hits (50), doubles (13) and RBIs (33) while he was second in the lineup with a .410 batting average and a .582 slugging percentage. The sophomore infielder ranked eighth in the league in batting average, 16th in slugging percentage and had the 21st highest on-base percentage in a season with seven three-hit games including a season-best 4-for-5 day with three RBIs and two doubles against St. Eliabeth. 

Goebel earned his first postseason award after leading the team and tied for 17th in the league with 42 runs scored. The Wildcats third baseman also ranked top-25 in the league with a .372 batting average and a .545 slugging percentage. Goebel recorded 45 hits, eight doubles, two triples and three home runs on the season to account for 31 RBIs.He posted eight multi-hit games including a 4-for-4 day with two doubles and four RBIs against King's and another four-hit game against Penn State Brandywine.

Munoz was one of the most reliable outfielders in the conference, posting a perfect 100% fielding percentage while in left field this season. The Tobyhanna, Pa., native was also one of the top hitters in the batting order with a .336 batting average, 39 hits, four doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 29 RBIs and scoring 21 times this season.
