WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Penn College and St. Mary's battled in a United East Conference men's lacrosse game that tilted in the Seahawks favor late for a 13-10 final score on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats dropped their conference opener, 0-1, 9-3 overall while the Seahawks remained undefeated in conference matches, 2-0, 7-4 overall.
How it happened: The Wildcats struck first, just over two minutes into the game when
Quinn Smith found
Elliot Dotson for the opening goal. After St. Mary's tied the game at 1-1 with 12 minutes to go in the opening frame, Elliot found his older brother,
AJ Dotson to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead with 8:13 on the clock and the Wildcats held the lead until the midpoint of the third quarter.
Elliot and
Tyler Diffenderfer added goals in the first quarter to lead 4-2 after 15 minutes.
Ben Malarkey,
Owen Kupsey and
Aidan McFalls handed the Wildcats a 7-5 lead at the half, and
Will Ehret touched nylon with 9:35 to go in the third quarter to lead 8-6. SMC knotted the game at 8-8 two minutes later before Kupsey and McFalls scored their second goals of the game to give the Wildcats a 10-8 lead heading into the final period.
The Seahawks scored five unanswered in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Inside the box: The Dotson's both posted four points, Elliot scored two goals and had two assists while AJ scored once and dished out three assists. Kupsey and McFalls also finished with two goals while Ehret scored a goal and an assist.
Ryan Twist recorded 21 saves including multiple point-blank saves to keep the Wildcats in front for more than 40 minutes.
Penn College scored the most goals in the all-time series against St. Mary's while limiting the Seahawks to the lowest goal total in the eight-game series.
