SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Penn College tennis teams won their first-round United East playoff matches on Saturday. The men bested Lancaster Bible College, 4-2, and the women outdid Penn State Brandywine, 4-1. Both winners now advance to the semifinals.
How it happened men: Penn College won three singles and three doubles matches for its four points as it improved to 6-2 in all conference matches and 8-6 overall. Lancaster Bible finished 2-6 in the UE and 2-10 overall
On the court men: Singles winners for the Wildcats were Josh Myers at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4; Avery Hawk at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, and by forfeit at No. 6. Doubles winners were Ogden-Matt Williams at No. 1, 6-3; Myers-Hawk at No. 2, 6-2; and by forfeit at No. 3.
How it happened women: Penn College captured three singles and two doubles matches while improving to 7-3 in all UE matches and 8-10 overall. Penn State Brandywine finished 4-6 in the UE and 7-9 overall.
On the court women: Singles winners for the Wildcats were Faith Murray at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2; Leah Vest at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2; and Kiera Wene at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0. Taking their doubles matches were Murray-Vest at No. 2, 6-1; and Wene-Cici Miller at No. 3, 6-3.
Up next: Penn College's women go to second-seeded Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday. In the other first-round match, No. 5 Lancaster Bible College defeated No. 4 Cairn University, 4-3, and will face No. 1 seed St. Mary's (Md.) College on Tuesday.
Penn College's men go to second-seeded St. Mary's (Md.) College on Wednesday. In the other men's first-round match, No. 4 Penn State Berks defeated No. 5 Penn State Abington, 4-3, and will face No. 1 seed Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday.
Both championship matches are next Sunday.
