Box Score 4 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn College's baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 3-6 record. The Wildcats picked up wins against Penn State Allegheny, Lehman College and University of Valley Forge.
"I was concerned about our young arms before the trip," Penn College coach
Christopher Howard admitted about his freshman/sophomore-heavy rotation. "But they threw well this week. My main concern in now our defense, which let us down.
Penn College surrendered 64 runs in nine games, which just 39 of them being earned. Twenty-seven errors led to 25 unearned runs.
"I'm very excited about our pitching staff," said Howard. "I think they proved that they are ready for this level. Now we just need our defense to catch up."
Trevor Dolin (1.13 ERA),
Cody Nelson (1.80) and
Aaron Palmer (2.08) each picked up wins for Penn College. Offensively,
Trevor Route batted .500, with five hits, one double, one triple and five RBI.
Bryce Merrill hit .455 with five hits, one double, one triple and three RBI.
Braden Smith knocked in six runs and batted .316 and
Ed Suri and
Richard Lennon each brought in five runs.
Penn College dropped its first two games of the week to nationally ranked University of Mary Washington, 11-1, and Mount Aloysius, 13-2.
Following an 8-5 win over Penn State Allegheny, in which Merrill and
Connor Doherty batted in two runs each and Dolin fired five innings to each the win, the Wildcats dropped their next three – 9-3 to Lehman and 2-1 and 12-4 to Swarthmore.
Penn College avenged its Lehman loss with a 6-2 win – led by Lennon and
Taylor Vandegrift two RBIs and Nelson's seven innings of work on the mound – and shelled Valley Forge 22-2.
The Wildcats wrapped up its week with an 8-5 setback to Swarthmore.
Penn College returns to action March 22 at Wilkes University.
