Box Score 4 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn College softball coach
Jackie Klahold's goal for her team's spring break trip was to go 4-4. The Wildcats achieved that mark as they finished their week with three-straight wins.
"We met that goal, so that's very exciting," Klahold said. "Towards the end of the trip our pitch selection at the plate improved, and our pitchers began getting ahead in the pitch count."
Taylor Krow,
Maddie Wenk and
Taylor Brooks all finished the week with batting averages above .400. Krow batted .481, with 13 hits and six RBI, Wenk's average was .421 with eight hits and seven RBI and Brooks tallied a .417 average with five RBI. All three pitchers –
Lauren Stehman,
Amanda Kustanbauter and Brooks – each picked up wins.
"I was very pleased with our leadoff hitter
Taylor Krow, who set the tone," Klahold said. "
Nicole Lo Furno came up with timely hits later in the week and
Maddie Wenk was very consistent at the plate."
The Wildcats started the trip with a pair of losses to LaRoche College, 8-5, and Penn State Berks, 11-7, on the first day before picking up their first win, 6-1, against Anna Maria College. Krow and
Elizabeth Asher each recorded two hits in the game – Krow finished with two RBI – and Kustanbauter fired a complete-game win.
Penn College dropped its next two to Gweynedd Mercy, 6-3, and Emory & Henry, 5-1.
Despite the setback to GM, Klahold said the play of the week was in that game in the bottom of the fourth with the game tied at 2-2, two outs and the bases loaded for GM. The Griffins' No. 9 hitter smacked a shot to left center field, where Lo Furno chased the ball down and made a diving catch for the final out of the inning to keep the game deadlocked.
The highlight of the week for the Wildcats was their come-from-behind win against King's College. Trailing 9-2 through the top half of the fifth inning, Penn College exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the frame and held on for the win. Krow finished with three hits and two RBI, Brooks brought in three runs on two hits Wenk finished with two hits and two RBI. Kustanbauter picked up her second win in six innings of work and Stehman earned the save by retiring the final three batters.
Penn College finished the week with a pair of shutout wins over Wentworth, 12-0, and Chatham, 11-0. Brooks highlight the Wentworth win by going 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBI, and firing a complete-game shutout to earn her first win.
Kelsey Gantz (3 RBI), Krow (2 RBI) and Lo Furno (2 RBI) provided much of the scoring against Chatham, and Stehman picked up the win in the circle.
Penn College returns to action March 31, 3:30 p.m., at Alfred State.
