Box Score 2 WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College dropped the first two conference softball games of the season to Penn State Berks Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats fell to 6-6 overall, 0-2 NEAC, while Berks improved to 10-8, 2-0.
In game one,
Penn State Berks took command early by jumping to a 5-0 lead to start the game. Penn College starting pitcher
Kyla Benner (Bethlehem, Pa.) was relieved by
Kayla Christopher (Northampton, Pa.) in the top of the first inning. The game was then a pitching duel as both teams struggled to bring in runs. Berks connected in the top of the fifth inning to tack on three additional runs to make the game 8-0. Penn College couldn't respond as Berks came away with the victory.
Benner dropped to 2-1 on the season by giving up 3 hits, 2 walks and 5 earned runs
In game two,
Penn College and Penn State Berks struggled to get runners around the diamond as both teams made great defensive plays. In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats looked to strike first, with
Maddie Wenk (Biglerville, Pa.) and
Lexi Heritage (New Castle, Del.) both connected on singles to put two runners on base. But Berks finished the inning with back-to-back outs to keep the Wildcats from scoring.
Penn State Berks picked up one run in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth innings to lead the Wildcats 2-0. The energy from the Penn College dugout was strong all day long, but fell short as Berks pulled away with the win.
Morgan Heritage (New Castle, Del.) went the distance, but dropped to 3-3 on the season, by giving up 7 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, March 31
st, as the Wildcats travel to face Penn State Harrisburg in a double header starting at 1:00pm.
