Wildcats Second Half Comeback Falls Short, Drop Home Opener 3-2

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College hosted Keystone College for their first game on beautiful UPMC Field Tuesday evening but came up just short in a 3-2 loss.  The Wildcats fell to 0-3, while the Giants improved to 2-1.

How it Happened: Keystone started the game on the attack and scored two quick goals within eight minutes to take a 2-0 lead.  The Wildcats looked to respond with multiple shots on goal, including a rip from Greg Conkle that hit the crossbar in the 20th minute.

Going into the break with a two-goal deficit, Coach Mensch gave a riveting halftime speech and the Wildcats answered the call with a second half rally.  In the 56th minute, Colton Wartman took the ball the distance and put the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a goal from the right side. Almost exactly one minute later, Penn College continued the attack with a pass from Dylan Snyder to Josiah Potts who scored his second goal of the season after splitting two defenders and drilling a shot from outside the box to tie the game 2-2.

The lead slipped as Keystone scored the last goal of the game in the 71st minute to take the lead and win the game, 3-2.

Inside the Box: Keystone held the advantage in shots, 14 to 11, and corner kicks, 8 to 5.

Brendan Skwirut saved 6 shots on goal for the Wildcats.

Outside the Box: In a tale of two completely different halves, one thing that is apparent to Coach Tyler Mensch is the defense must improve.  "We played right with them the entire second half", Mensch stated.  "But we must improve on the defensive end.  We gave up two goals to start the game and had too many defensive lapses."  The Wildcats shot even with Keystone in the second half, 7-7, with some great passing that led to good offensive chances.  The Wildcats displayed a lot of character to fight back and sparks of energy before a packed stadium at UPMC Field.  Mensch added, "The crowd was great.  You could feel their energy on the field and the players definitely responded."

Up Next: Penn College returns to action Wednesday, September 11, home against Lycoming College at 7:00 PM.
