NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Penn College shot a 313 in Wednesday's second round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club, and coupled with its first-day 317, finished play with a two-day 630 and 37
th place among 43 teams.
How it happened: In Tuesday's opening round on the par 72, 6,701-yard Keene Run course,
Gavin Baer recorded a 5-over-par 77 and was tied for 111
th, while
Peyton Mussina shot a 78 and was tied for 130
th,
Gunner Redmond shot a 79 and was tied for 145
th,
Will Orwig shot an 83 and was tied for 193
rd, and
Trevor Keaton recorded an 88 and was tied for 213
th.
Wednesday on the par 72, 6,974-yard Champions Trace course, Baer shot his second consecutive 77 to finish with a 154 and tie for 130
th, while Mussina also shot a 77 for a 155 total and tied for 141
st. Also for the Wildcats, Orwig recorded a 79 and Redmond an 83 as both ended with 162 and tied for 189
th, and Keaton came in with an 80 for a 168 total and tied for 207
th among the 220 players who finished.
The field: After the first day, St. John's (Minnesota) led the 43-team field with a 284 and was closely followed by Illinois Wesleyan at 285 and Christopher Newport University at 286. Defending champion Methodist University was fourth at 288.
Teamwise, defending champion Methodist University rallied on Wednesday with a 285 and moved into a tie for first place with Piedmont University, which shot 284, as the field was trimmed to the top 18 teams and the top six individuals who are not on a qualifying team, who will continue playing on Thursday and Friday.
Individually, Henry Scavone, of Carnegie Mellon University; Alex Price, of Christopher Newport; Sam Berger, of St. John's (Minnesota); and Bobby Beaubien, of Illinois Wesleyan, were tied for the lead after two rounds at 140, while three others were right behind them at 141.
