FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Penn College, led by Peyton Mussina who recorded a 4-under-par 140 total and tied for third among 61 golfers, tallied a 603 and tied for seventh in an 11-team field over the weekend in the George Cangero Invitational at the Bethpage State Park Blue Golf Course.
How it happened Saturday: Mussina had five birdies on the par 72, 6,693-yard course and was tied for fifth with three others, two strokes behind the tournament leaders. Also, Gunner Redmond shot 76 and was tied for 33rd, Will Orwig shot 78 and was tied for 41st, Brady Handy shot 79 and was tied for 44th and Logan Gawlinski shot 85 and was tied for 57th as the Wildcats totaled 303 and were eighth in an 11-team field.
The field Saturday: Host Farmingdale State and NYU shared the team lead at 284, followed by Luther 287, Gettysburg 288, Adelphi 290, Farmingdale State "B" 299, SUNY Delhi 299, Penn College 303, North Carolina Wesleyan 306, Stevens Institute 309 and SUNY Old Westbury 328.
Individually, Oscar Uribe of NYU and CJ Merritt of Farmingdale State shared the lead with 68s.
How it happened Sunday: Mussina closed with five birdies and six pars over his last 11 holes for another 70 and his 140 total, four shots behind the winners. Also for the Wildcats, Handy fired a 74—153, tied for 37th; Redmond shot 78—154, tied for 40th; Orwig shot 78—156, tied for 45th; and Gawlinski came home with a 79—164, tied for 53rd.
The field Sunday: Three teams shared the team title after Adelphia came in with a 279—569, Gettysburg scored a 281—569 and Luther scored a 282—569. Following were Farmingdale State 290—574, NYU 291—575, SUNY Delhi 303—602, Penn College 300—603, North Carolina Wesleyan 297—303, Farmingdale State "B" 307—606, Stevens Institute 313—622 and SUNY Old Westbury 325—653.
Individually, Merritt recorded his second consecutive 68 for a 136 total, and Gettysburg's Daniel Suter had rounds of 71-65—136 to lead the field.
