BOULDER CITY, Nev. — Playing in 90-plus degree heat, the Penn College men's golf team was 34th with a 305 and individually Peyton Mussina was tied for 14th after Day 1 of the NCAA Division III championships on Tuesday in its quest for a top 18 finish after Wednesday's round and a chance to remain in the running for the title.
How it happened: Mussina carded a bogey-free 3-under 69 on the par 72, 7,377-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club course to lead the Wildcats in a 221-player field while Will Orwig shot a 76 and tied for 121st, Gavin Baer shot 79 and tied for 169th, Gunner Redmond shot 81 and tied for 188th, and Trevor Keaton shot 82 and tied for 199th. Only the low four scores count toward the team total.
The field: Methodist University led in the 43-team race with 271, Emory was second at 272 and Redlands was third at 275. Individually, Jackson Klutznick of Emory was on top with an 8-under 64 and Jon McEwen of Washington and Lee was second with a 65.
