BOULDER CITY, Nev. — After putting together the best back-to-back rounds of his collegiate career on Tuesday and Wednesday and being tied for second place, Penn College's Peyton Mussina shot a 75 on Thursday and was tied for 10th among 96 players in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
How it happened: Mussina opened the third round on the par 72, 7,377-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club course with birdies on the first two holes, a bogey on the third and a double-bogey, his first of the tournament, on the fourth hole. He then righted the ship with pars on the next four holes before a bogey to complete the front 9 in 2-over 38.
A double-bogey on hole 11, around two pars, and a birdie at 13 put Mussina at plus-three with five holes remaining. He closed with a bogey, par, a birdie on the 608-yard 16th, and par, par for a 3-over 75 and 212 total — five strokes off the lead — going into Friday's final round.
The field: Brett Viator of Huntingdon College and Mike O'Sullivan of Oglethorpe share the individual lead at 207.
Carnegie-Mellon leads the 18-team field with an 849, one stroke ahead of Methodist University and Redlands.
Up next: Play concludes Friday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
