BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Penn College picked up its first wins of the season with a sweep over Bryn Athyn in a North Eastern Athletic Conference men's and women's tennis doubleheader Saturday. The men improved to 1-3 NEAC, 1-9 overall with an 8-1 win, while the women improved 1-3, 1-10 after a 6-3 victory.
In the men's match,
The Wildcats swept the doubles competition and took all but one of the singles matches.
Nicholas Pascual and
Ethan Rosler won No. 1 doubles 8-3,
Andrew Francisco and
Stephen Helminiak took No. 2 doubles 8-2, and
Austin Adams and
Dylan Therrian won No. 3 doubles 8-2.
Rosler won No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-4 before Pascual blanked his opponent in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Francisco won his No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-2, Helminiak battled to a 2-6, 7-5, 10-3 win at No. 4, and Therrian won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
The men return to the court Thursday hosting Miscericordia.
In the women's match,
Penn College won two of three doubles competitions and four of six singles matches.
Morgan Blackwell and
Melissa Stabley teamed up for an 8-0 win in No. 1 double before
Jane Herman and
Emily Bell won No. 2 doubles 8-6.
Stabley had a competitive match in No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win and Blackwell grinded out a 6-4, 7-5 win in No. 2 singles. Herman stayed perfect in NEAC play with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and
Valerie Kubalak won an 8-1 pro set at No. 5. Bell battled at No. 4 with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 loss.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday at College of Saint Elizabeth.
